In the ECS4DRES project, we are developing solutions for demand response. This is relevant because, in the future energy system, it will be increasingly important to consume energy when it is produced instead of producing energy when we need it, as we still largely do today.

Grid operators in different EU member states use similar reserve markets to ensure a balanced power system at all times. One challenge to scaling up the demand response products developed in the ECS4DRES project (as well as in other projects), is that these reserve markets differ slightly from one member state to the next. This means that solutions must be tailored to each EU country, which hinders commercial rollout.

ECS4DRES partner Krachtwerk is addressing this issue in two ways:

  • First, Krachtwerk investigates the subtle differences in reserve markets across countries and creates robust demand response control strategies that can be applied throughout Europe.
  • Second, Krachtwerk is creating a commercial tool that will allow different European "balancing actors" (Balance Responsible Parties and Balancing Service Providers) to anonymously benchmark their results against their peers, enabling them to improve their algorithms using a wide range of metrics.

In short, within the ECS4DRES project, Krachtwerk is developing a technical solution to scale up demand response algorithms across Europe and is supporting the professionalization of the parties that need to implement such solutions.
